Come On In, The Water Is Fine

Most of us are familiar with the ins and outs of physical therapy, but aquatic therapy? Many of us are less familiar with this option. There are, however, some perks to performing therapy in the water.

When in the water we are naturally somewhat buoyant which takes the pressure off joints and muscles making some activities easier by taking gravity at least partway out of the equation. Visualizing some patients out of the water there is obvious pain, and movement can be difficult and painful with each step. Those same patients when in the water, may see improvement in their posture, movement, and gait, all of which can become easier and less painful. With the improved abilities in the water, there is often an almost tangible enhancement in mood and attitude as well.

Noodles and flotation devices can be utilized to help patients with balance and allow them to work against resistance. Fibromyalgia patients tend to thrive with this type of therapy facilitating movement and diminishing pain. If you are considering physical therapy for your pain symptoms, gait, fibromyalgia, or other issues you may want to talk to your Advanced Spine and Pain specialist about aquatic therapy. Come on in, the water is fine!
