JUST STICK IT!

Many patients with chronic pain feel like their search for pain relief is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Several needles expertly placed may just be the answer to your search.

What exactly is acupuncture? Acupuncture has apparently been around for thousands of years and involves inserting tiny needles through the skin at various points of the body. It is a predominantly Eastern medicine approach, but is gaining traction with Western medicine practitioners, particularly in the treatment of pain, and is much more mainstream than it has ever been.

How it works is not entirely clear. Some claim it balances the body's energy, or “qi,” which is pronounced “chi.” Others cite that the small areas of injury at the needle insertion site triggers an immune response by increasing circulation to the area and diminishing pain.

The cost of treatment will vary by city but generally ranges from $60-125 a session. We would recommend searching out a certified and licensed acupuncturist if you are considering this treatment option. Look for the LAc after his or her name.

If you are on blood thinner medication you might want to think twice about getting acupuncture. But when the treatment is performed by a licensed acupuncturist the treatment is quite safe and can be added to other treatment options.

If you are in pain and looking for an alternative treatment you may just want to tell your pain to “stick it.” A few expertly placed needles may just diminish your pain, help balance your yin and yang, and get yourself moving toward good physical and mental health.
