A Picture Is Worth A Thousand !^#*@ Words
Any type of spinal injection can be challenging without fluoroscopy (x-ray guidance) because of the inherent subtle changes in anatomy from person to person. Even with a tremendous command of the human anatomy, anatomical changes vary from person to person and can occur at birth or over time through normal wear and tear. As a result, no two spines are ever exactly alike.
Several of our patients have experienced spinal injections in the past at other practices without the benefit of fluoroscopy and typically describe blood-curdling screams, followed by a torrent of profanities directed toward the provider holding the needle who is trying to find the correct placement with landmarks and by touch alone.
Fluoroscopy is essentially a technique that gathers real-time moving images, in our case, of your spine. These images are displayed on a monitor guiding the provider in real-time, helping to avoid bony structures while assisting in the delivery of medication and treatment to areas that will provide you with the greatest benefit. At Advanced Spine and Pain (ASAP), a fluoroscopic picture is definitely worth a thousand !^#*@ words.
