Doctor writing a prescription

Why did my provider give me a prescription for Narcan?

Let us start off by explaining what Narcan is. Narcan is a medication that is commonly prescribed as a nose spray for a possible opioid overdose. Narcan is used when there is an emergency where there is a suspected overdose due to opioids.

You may think to yourself that will never happen to me. But, it may and that is why we want you and your family members to be safe. We encourage you to read the pamphlet that is provided with this medication and inform your provider if you have any questions.

Listed below are the reason why Narcan may be used:

  • An incorrect dose was prescribed
  • Increased dose of medication was not tolerated well
  • Taking more medication than prescribed, by accident
  • Taking opioids in combination with other system depressant drugs such as alcohol, muscle relaxants, or sleep aids
  • Misuse of opioids by someone who has not been prescribed the drug
  • Accidental exposure or consumption of an opioid by a child
