Handprint left on memory foam mattress

Many people have asked if a new mattress will help with relieving back pain and, if so, what kind should they buy. The answer is yes…a new mattress can help alleviate some back pain.

But there is no one mattress that is best for back pain. Whether you prefer innerspring, memory foam, latex, or another type, there are a few things to consider when shopping for a new mattress if you have back pain. The main things are if it provides support and comfort.

Let your sleep position help guide you when it comes to choosing a mattress comfort level. Research has shown that those who sleep on their back will do better with a medium-firm mattress to keep their spine in a neutral position. If you sleep on your side you will want a slightly softer mattress to allow for the hips to sink in a bit and alleviate pressure on hips and shoulders.
