Plantar Fasciitis

Do you wake up in the morning and take your first few steps out of bed with pain at the bottom of your feet extending toward the heels? If so, you may have what is called plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a thick ligament connecting your heel to your toes. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is structural. If you have either high arches or flat feet, you are at risk of developing plantar fasciitis. You are also at risk if you are on your feet for extended periods of time or if you are overweight or pregnant.

Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medication, and stretching are generally the first line in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Wearing shoes with good arch support will be critical for patients suffering from this ailment. Avoid going barefoot as this can place unnecessary strain on the plantar fascia. If symptoms persist, injection therapy options at Advanced Spine and Pain may also be considered.

If symptoms are resistant to the above, surgical resolution may be a consideration. If after reading this you determine that you may have symptoms suggestive of plantar fasciitis, you may want to put your best foot forward and get your foot in the door at ASAP, ASAP.
