Dr. Peter T. McCunniff is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic Spine Surgeon serving the greater Phoenix area and is the newest spine specialist at Advanced Spine and Pain. His role completes ASAP’s comprehensive spine care model that begins with conservative therapy and pain management, followed by procedural interventions, with surgical consultation reserved for patients who continue to experience significant pain and disability. This coordinated approach ensures patients receive the right care at the right time.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa, completed residency at Case Western and University Hospitals in Cleveland, and completed a Spine Surgery fellowship in Scottsdale focused on minimally invasive techniques across the spine. He has now practiced in the Valley for six years, offering advanced procedures including minimally invasive surgery, disc replacement, motion-preserving techniques, and navigation and robotic-assisted surgery.
Dr. McCunniff performed the first cervical disc replacement at Arizona Surgical Specialists Center in 2023 and the first navigated single-position lateral anterior posterior lumbosacral surgery at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in 2025. He remains active in research with more than a dozen peer-reviewed publications and numerous presentations. He is also one of the few Valley surgeons performing oblique lumbar surgery, which can help improve alignment and reduce stress on other spinal levels. He has contributed to research and development of the tools and implants used in these procedures.
