Post-Procedural Collagen Wound Care Tips

• Watch the Wound Care Instructional Video

Advanced Spine and Pain utilizes advanced collagen dressings to optimize your recovery phase. Unlike standard bandages, collagen wound dressings are used for three primary reasons:

  • Infection Prevention: It helps create a barrier against harmful bacteria.
  • Moisture Control: It creates an optimal moist environment that is necessary for cellular repair.
  • Biological Scaffolding: Most importantly, it creates a "scaffold" that helps the wound heal quickly by providing a framework for new tissue growth.

Application Instructions

In your post-procedural phase, you may have received one of two types of collagen dressings. Begin this care on Post-Op Day 3 after you have taken your first shower.

1. Collagen Matrix Dressing (Sheet)

The Collagen Matrix is a pliable sheet that can be easily customized to the size of your incision.

  • Open the bandage and break or fold the sheet to match the length of your incision.
  • Lay the collagen sheet directly on top of the incision.
  • Place an Island Dressing (the adhesive top patch) over the collagen matrix to secure it.
  • Keep this in place until your shower the following day.

2. CollaSorb Powder (Wound Filler)

CollaSorb is a collagen-based powder used as a filler to promote rapid absorption and healing.

  • Apply a judicious amount of the powder directly onto the wound site.
  • With a clean hand, gently spread the powder so it covers the entire incision.
  • Apply an Island Dressing directly over the powder to cover and protect the area.

The "BLT" Rule for Spine Patients

To ensure your incision heals properly and the sutures remain intact, please remember to avoid the BLTs:

  • NO Bending: Avoid straining the lower back or neck.
  • NO Lifting: Do not lift heavy objects.
  • NO Twisting: Keep your spine neutral.

Back muscles are very strong and can pull at the suture site. Following these restrictions is vital for a successful recovery.
