Fibromyalgia: Myth or Monster

It is truly unfortunate that a great many who suffer from fibromyalgia and deal with daily widespread body pain, chronic fatigue, memory issues, difficulty concentrating, lack of energy, muscle twitches, cramps, depression/anxiety, numbness, and tingling, also on occasion deal with their health practitioners not believing in the diagnosis itself. It is estimated that ten million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is most definitely a real condition and when patients are down and suffering and come in for help, it is reprehensible to accuse them that their symptoms are all in their head. Although the cause of fibromyalgia is yet unknown, it makes the condition no less real.

Individuals with fibromyalgia process pain differently. For unknown reasons, fibromyalgia patients have had the volume on their pain receptors turned way up, to the point that even light touch and regular activities that should not induce pain, do cause pain and sometimes significant pain.

Do not despair. There are treatments available for fibromyalgia. These may include medications, massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, water therapy. Your treatment focus should include getting enough regular sleep, regular exercise, and minimizing stress.

Please do not let fibromyalgia turn into the monster that it can become. Talk to your ASAP pain provider and let us get you the treatment that your symptoms warrant.
