Man with knee pain

Fighting knee pain with a new technique

Frequent knee pain affects approximately 25% of the adult population. It is associated with pain typically with bending, twisting, or turning movements. Often it can limit your activities of daily living.

A frequent diagnosis of knee pain is associated with osteoarthritis in patients 50 years and older. It often causes patients to seek medical treatment and is a common cause for knee replacement surgery.

Months after surgery patients can complain of pain in and around the knee joint. Treatments are often limited to trials with conservative measures, including ice, heat, and massage therapies as well as anti-inflammatory use. However, a newer treatment that has shown to help reduce knee pain is genicular nerve blocks.

The genicular nerves are located on the medial and lateral aspects of the knee. These nerves can best be targeted under fluoroscopic guidance and medication such as local anesthetics, steroids, and even in some severe cases phenol can be used to block these sensitive nerves and allow patients to function much more comfortably with their activities.

It is one of the many treatment options offered at Advanced Spine and Pain and would be of good consideration to further discuss and review with your pain provider if knee pain affects your function and quality of life.
