A True Pain in the Behind

Tail bone pain occurs in and around the bony structures at the bottom of the spine called the coccyx region. This area of pain commonly occurs from an awkward fall, arthritic joint, prolonged periods of sitting on a hard surface, after childbirth, or seen at times in very thin individuals.

A few weeks ago, a middle-aged female came to the office complaining of pain in and around her tailbone. She reported that her coccyx pain was more noticeable when sitting, crossing her legs, or bending and described having to change positions often as this was more bothersome.

The patient had tried some conservative measures of ice, heat, massage therapy, and even using a modified cushion to help alleviate her pain, but with little change.  She started physical therapy and gentle low-impact exercises with limited benefit.

The patient underwent imaging studies and returned for an injection (coccygeal nerve blockade). She reported a great reduction in her pain for several weeks and was quite pleased with the improvement in her daily activities. Shortly thereafter the injection, the patient underwent a longer-term treatment for her symptoms with coccygeal nerve radiofrequency ablation.

If tailbone pain is keeping you down, make an appointment with a provider at ASAP for evaluation and consideration of treatment options to help you return to your proper functioning.
