Man with an injured finger

What Is the Rule of Thumb for Injured Digits?

All of us at one time or another have had the misfortune of injuring fingers or toes.

Whether we were attempting to cross the room in the dark and stubbed our toe on the leg of a table or resting our hand on the door jamb when someone decided it was a good time to close the door. But when should we be knocking on the emergency room or urgent care door seeking medical attention?

  • Oh, snap! – An audible snap should cue you to seek medical attention immediately.
  • Persistent pain – While a sprain can be painful it does not typically persist. If your throbbing pain is unrelenting seek medical attention.
  • Let me get this straight – If you are unable to straighten your finger or toe, it is a good idea to seek medical attention.
  • Cut to the chase – If there is a significant cut to the digit that you think may require stitches, it is probably a good idea to have medical personnel take a look.
  • Off-color – While an injury to your toe or finger may trigger some off-color words, if your digit has discoloration, this is much more common in fractures than sprains and should warrant medical attention.
  • I can’t stand this – If your injury is preventing you from standing or walking, or if you are having difficulty maintaining your grip and find yourself dropping items, your injury may be more severe and should trigger further medical investigation.
  • Oh, that’s cold – If your injured digit is colder compared to the other uninjured digits you should seek medical attention.
