What can CBD do for you?

What is CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a hemp-derived product that does not contain the psychoactive component– THC. At this time, the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a prescription oil called Epidiolex. Currently, CBD is being studied as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including pain/inflammation, anxiety, multiple sclerosis and psychiatric conditions. Due to the recent changes in law, there is limited literature for the compound’s benefits to date.

Is CBD Marijuana, and can it get me “high”?

No and no. It is important to differentiate the definitions of marijuana and hemp: Both marijuana and hemp are classified as part of the cannabis plant family. Marijuana contains high levels of THC in excess of 0.3% THC, which is well known for its psychoactive effects. Conversely, in the USA, hemp is classified by the federal government as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight. All CBD utilized at Advanced Spine and Pain (ASAP) is hemp-derived. CBD is not psychoactive, it does not have the same ability to create a “high”, or state of euphoria, as THC. CBD may help you feel relaxed or less anxious, but you won't get “high” if you choose to use a CBD-infused oil, tincture, edible, or other product.

Will this show up on my urine drug screen?

No. There are two categories of CBD products we carry at ASAP (full-spectrum and broad-spectrum). Full-spectrum CBD consists of cannabidiol, hemp plant material and up to 0.3% THC.

Broad-spectrum CBD consists of cannabidiol plus hemp plant material with 0% THC. In each product, the use will not elicit a positive THC urine drug test due to the minimal-zero amounts of THC present.

Standard testing in the USA utilizes a urine drug screen cutoff of 50 ng/mL, which is impossible to achieve with any of the above CBD dosing and products. ASAP’s CBD products have been third-party tested as well as individually sampled to ensure this will not be an issue for any patient’s urine drug screens (if needed). However, many CBD products on the market have been found to not be consistent with their ingredients; so if you decide to utilize outside CBD products, “buyer beware” as you place yourself at risk for testing positive for THC.

How much CBD do I take?

CBD is not currently regulated by the FDA, and there are no official recommended dosages. Most of the human studies use dosages anywhere between 20 and 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day. A good rule of thumb when dosing is “start low and go slow”.

A general guideline for initiating dosing: Patient weight (in pounds) divided by

  1. 4 (low dose) = total mg dose in 24 hr period
  2. 3 (intermediate dose) = total mg dose in 24 hr period
  3. 2 (high dose) = total mg dose in 24 hr period

Does CBD have any side effects, or is it addictive?

Common side effects include: dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness and fatigue. CBD is not considered addictive or have any withdrawal symptoms if discontinued abruptly.

Ask your provider if CBD is right for you.
